Isla Grace’s first birthday didn’t go exactly as we planned.
Originally, we had hoped to celebrate on her actual birthday, but because of Paul’s filming schedule, we moved the party a week and a half later so he could be there.
Then, at 8:30 the night before the party, he got a call that changed everything.
He needed to leave for set 30 minutes before the party started.
After already rescheduling once, we knew we couldn’t ask everyone to rearrange their schedules again. So the party went on... even though her daddy couldn’t be there.
We were able to get pictures with Paul before he left.
Of course, we missed him. But as the day unfolded, I was reminded of something I’ll probably carry with me for every celebration to come: sometimes the people you wish could be there can’t be, and that doesn’t make the day any less beautiful.

This first year held so much. Beautiful moments. Hard moments. Sleepless nights. New routines. So much learning. And more grace than I could ever deserve.
Celebrating Isla Grace wasn’t simply about turning one.
It felt like pausing long enough to thank God for carrying us through another year as a family. At the end of the day, decorations fade. Cakes get eaten. Balloons come down.
Gratitude lasts.

I kept everything soft and simple. Pinks, creamy vanilla, butter yellow, and touches of mint—like every scoop at an old-fashioned ice cream shop melted together.
We actually pulled many of the same colors from Isla Grace’s nursery so everything felt like an extension of her instead of a set built for one afternoon.

The food was honestly the easiest part because the theme did most of the work.
We created a simple ice cream bar using Jeni’s Ice Cream. I loved that it felt elevated without requiring hours in the kitchen. Some of our favorite flavors were:

If you love homemade ice cream, a Ninja CREAMi would be such a fun way to make a few flavors ahead of time. For toppings we kept it simple:

That’s it. For serving, I used pastel paper cups and small bowls with disposable spoons. One less thing to wash after a first birthday is always a gift.
What Isla Grace wore
She wore a little ice cream print set with a soft bow headband, and that was the whole outfit plan.
My one piece of advice here: comfort over cute, or at least comfort with cute. She still needed to crawl, nap, and get sticky. A simple themed outfit she could move in beat anything stiff or fussy. She was happy, and that made the photos better anyway.

Most of the guests at a first birthday are grown-ups, so I did not go big here. Just a few sweet touches for the little cousins and friends.

Here’s the order I’d follow if I were doing it all again.
1. Pick your date—but hold it loosely.
Life happens.
We learned that firsthand.
Sometimes work schedules, illness, or unexpected circumstances change everything. That’s okay.
The people matter more than the calendar.
2. Choose two or three colors.
Keeping a small palette makes every decorating decision easier.
3. Order your statement pieces early.
Your backdrop, banner, and number one balloon make the biggest impact.
4. Keep food simple.
An ice cream bar serves as both dessert and entertainment.
5. Set up the day before.
Trust me.
You don’t want to be hanging balloons while chasing a one-year-old.
6. Plan around naps.
Everything is easier with a rested birthday girl.
First birthday tips I would tell any mom
If we were sitting together with coffee, this is the part I would slow down for.
Keep it short. An hour and a half to two hours is plenty. Babies get overstimulated fast, and a shorter party protects everyone's peace, including yours.
Work around the nap, not against it. A rested baby is a happy baby. Plan the whole day around that window and do not feel bad about it.
Remember it is really for you. She will not remember this day. You will. So make choices that let you actually be present instead of running around the whole time.
You do not have to spend a lot. The sweetest parts of Isla's day were free. Her daddy home. Family in one room. A baby covered in ice cream. None of that came from a budget.
And this is the one I hold closest. Celebrate on your family's timeline, not the calendar's. We waited so Paul could be there (and then that fell through too), but the thought and intent was there.
Some seasons ask you to hold things loosely. This was one of those, and I am so glad we did.

But when I think back on that day, I don’t think about the balloons first. I think about the people. I think about looking around the room and seeing grandparents, family, cousins, friends, and people who have prayed for us, encouraged us, and loved our family throughout Isla Grace’s first year of life.
Of course, we wished Paul could have been there. We missed him deeply.
But one unexpected work call didn’t have the power to steal the joy of celebrating our little girl. At the end of the day, birthdays aren’t remembered because every detail went according to plan. They’re remembered because of the people who gathered together to celebrate someone they love. The decorations were beautiful, but they weren’t the best part. The best part was having some of the most special people in our lives gathered together in one room.
That’s what celebrations are really about.
Not the backdrop. Not the balloons. Not even the cake. They’re about the people who surround you. They’re about slowing down long enough to celebrate another year of life.
